My Thoughts on Protein Supplements

Protein supplements are so readily available now, in supermarkets you can find tons of options for high protein drinks, bars and the like, and even tubs of whey protein powder.

Brands like MyProtein are massive now, but back when I started getting into the fitness industry protein supplements weren’t so popular. And in general I think it’s a good thing that they are more accepted and we have more options.

Do I recommend protein supplements?

Yes. Of course, it’s better to get your nutrients from food. But most of us just can't realistically do that. Work, life, whatever gets in the way, and supplementation is a great way to, well, supplement your diet.

I'd wager 90% of people would do very well by adding 2 whey protein shakes into their day.

Not only when you’re exercising. No days off. Just adding 2 protein shakes per day will make you feel, look and perform better.

Protein supplements are simple

The thing with a whey protein shake is it’s cost effective, quick and simple.

Any people I train who are asking about dietary changes - I always recommend not trying to change everything all at once. It does not work.

Instead I say to them - take 2 scoops of protein per day.

1 first thing in the morning - with and not instead of - breakfast.

Then another post-workout, but if you’re not working out then just have it in between a meal in the afternoon or evening.

Protein promotes growth

If you are exercising in any way, you want to be able to recover. Nitrogen is in protein, not carbs, not fat, and is the only way you can grow.

But, you do most your growing on your ‘off’ days and when you’re sleeping.

I believe switching from the old-school mentality of having protein when you're working out is fundamentally a crap solution.

You should always have plenty of protein. You're literally made of it.

Protein is more satiating

If you are more satiated, you’re less likely to snack and overeat. Because you feel satisfied. Including extra protein will most of the time actually help you stay more lean, rather than what most people think which is adding extra calories and getting fat.

A whey protein isolate shake is around 100 calories for 24 grams of protein. Trust me, that’s never going to be the culprit for making you gain bodyfat.

Try having 2 protein shakes per day, even if you’re not exercising. I think you’ll like the results.
